A Message from Educate Texas on Dreamers

July 8, 2020

Educate Texas applauds the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects nearly 700,000 young people who are living, working and attending school in the United States. This ruling is a victory for the more than 107,000 DACA registrants, often called Dreamers, who reside here in Texas.

We believe this outcome is both a moral and an economic imperative to support the critical role Dreamers play in shaping and building a stronger, more vibrant Texas.  Dreamers contribute to the fabric of our communities through their diversity, dignity and strength of spirit. Further, their impact as students, educators, front-line health care workers, family members, business owners and neighbors helps our great state and nation prosper.

Texas has historically been a leader in supporting immigrant students in K-12 and higher education, including providing in-state college tuition and financial aid to undocumented students since 2001.  As an organization dedicated to addressing the educational success of low income, minority students, Educate Texas is proud to do our part to ensure bright futures for Dreamers and their families.

While the Supreme Court provided a temporary reprieve, there is broad, bipartisan support for more permanent protection for Dreamers via the Dream and Promise Act.  We stand together with our allies, leaders and advocates who work alongside us to advance this cause and our shared dreams.

Sincerely,

The Educate Texas Team
