Educate Texas Statement on United States Supreme Court Decision on Affirmative Action
Educate Texas today released the below statement following the United States Supreme Court decision to block affirmative action admissions policies used by Harvard College and the University of North Carolina.
“Our organization is concerned and disappointed by last week’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling to effectively end affirmative action policies nationwide. While this decision does not impact the majority of Texas public colleges and universities we work with directly, Educate Texas exists to create and support pathways into higher education and access to high skill-high wage careers,” said Educate Texas Executive Director John Fitzpatrick. “Here at Educate Texas, our vision is that all Texas students, especially African American, Latino, and economically disadvantaged students earn a college degree or credential that leads to a living wage and thriving communities. We recognize that students come from all different levels of readiness when they begin school. Educate Texas will continue working to create intentional programs and support policies that provide opportunities for students of different races and backgrounds and help close equity gaps that exist within the K12 and higher education systems in Texas. It is critical that intentional programs are supported to provide opportunities for students of different races and backgrounds and help close equity gaps that exist in the education system.”
Educate Texas, an initiative of Communities Foundation of Texas, is the trusted change agent in education that is thinking bigger by proving solutions through programs and practices, instilling change through policy, and convening the right partnerships and networks for action.
