Our 2020 Census Approach in Texas
Our Statewide Census Efforts
While many local communities – Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, rural communities – have established their own campaign to address local gaps, the goal of the 2020 Texas Counts Campaign (TCC) is to create a coordinated cross-sector campaign that unites and ensures strong practices and resources are highlighted and deployed statewide. Our belief is that this statewide coordination will provide critical support for existing efforts and further enhance our ability to reach our hardest to count populations.
The TCC has enlisted leaders from key sectors (including faith, business, advocacy, community-based organizations and philanthropy) to:
- Develop a statewide TCC Steering Committee and infrastructure for promoting the 2020 Census
- Enlist prominent leaders to amplify the 2020 Census through their networks and influence
- Aggregate data, local best practices, and tools in easy-to-navigate online resource
- Share best practices and resources with hard-to-count communities; and
- Recommend ways for the statewide pooled fund to identify and support high need and hard-to-count areas that may need additional resources and assistance.
The Texas Counts Pooled Fund
As a coordinated, but separate, effort, the Communities Foundation of Texas has established a statewide Texas Counts Pooled Fund (TCPF) to provide critical funds that will enable local communities to target outreach efforts and implement best practices that will ensure a fair and accurate count for Texas.
Over the next 12 months, as the statewide TCC works to provide greater visibility, coordination, and execution of the 2020 Census, the TCPF will invest in underfunded hard-to-count communities.
The goal of the TCPF will be to assess recommendations and insights from the TCC and determine how best to allocate available resources to address the needs of local hard to count communities and populations.
