The Importance of the Texas Commission on Community College Finance
November 16, 2021
Philanthropy Advocates empowers philanthropy to invest and engage in public and higher education policy and advocacy. We work to protect, promote and improve public and higher education so that all Texas students can achieve their educational goals from cradle to career.
Our work to promote the success of our students and future prosperity of our state doesn’t end at high school graduation. We must ensure that students are on pathways to college and career success.
We, along with other education advocates and partners signed onto a letter to Governor
Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dade Phelan and members of the legislature to emphasize the importance of the Texas Commission on Community College Finance and the benefits of community colleges to students, our workforce and the state.

th
Regular Legislative Session in 2021, the legislature charged the commission with making strategic recommendations to sustain community college funding in support of strengthening student outcomes.
This initial meeting of the commission allowed members to gather and hear from state leaders about current issues in the field and facing students in Texas. Texas Higher Education Commissioner Harrison Keller and Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chair Bryan Daniel as well as representatives from the offices of the Comptroller and State Demographer discussed the various components for members to consider as they work together to make helpful recommendations.
Philanthropy Advocates will continue to support this work as it strives to strengthen education and the future of Texas.
The next meeting of the commission will be held on December 13, 2021.
